Welcome to the Volunteer Services page of the Cypress Health Region's website. We are continually looking for individuals who wish to take time out of their busy schedule to donate some time in the care and hospitality of our communities seniors. We offer a variety of services to choose from that are described at the bottom of this page. The process of becoming a volunteer is simple and only involves a few simple steps such as filling out an application form and submitting it to the Cypress Health Region. Long term, short term or one time only volunteer commitments are available.

Ways you can get involved...
Friendly Telephoning
For clients living alone, this service provides a friendly chat and reassurance that someone is aware of their state of health. The volunteer telephones on specific days at specific times. If there is no answer, the volunteer immediately notifies a designated contact or Home Care. Although the length of calls varies, allow about ten minutes for each.
Friendly Visiting
Many clients have few contacts with the outside world. The volunteer brings a bit of the outside in. They may visit, share a hobby, play cards or write letters. Visits can last from a half-hour to two hours and range from once a week to once a month.
Activity Program Volunteer
To participate with the recreational activity programs at the Prairie Pioneers Lodge, Palliser Regional Care Centre or Swift Current Care Centre.
Meals-On-Wheels Driver
Mid-day meals are delivered regularly to clients’ homes. With the assistance of a helper, each Meals-On-Wheels driver delivers from 1 to 16 meals to clients each day, except Sunday. This calls for good drivers with reliable vehicles and one hour to spare between 11:00 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.

Helpers assist the driver find client addresses and carry meals into the homes.
Volunteer Driver
Many Home Care clients must rely on friends or family for rides. At times they find themselves without a way to get to an appointment. The volunteer driver is asked to assist the client into and out of the car. Occasionally, a volunteer transports Home Care clients and stays with them throughout appointments. Since requests for rides are frequently made on short notice, a long list of persons willing to provide this service is appreciated.
Auxiliary Programs
Volunteers donate time to the two auxiliaries at Palliser Regional Care Centre and Cypress Regional Hospital .
Wellness Program
Volunteers greet and organize clients.
Errand or Shopping Volunteer
Many clients need someone to help them with everyday errands. Volunteers willing to shop, pay bills and post letters contribute significantly to client well-being. Dependability and willingness to do what the client requests are important qualities.
Youth Opportunities
Junior Hospital Volunteer
Students 15 years of age and older can volunteer after school and/or Saturdays 1-2 times a week at the hospital and the Swift Current Care Centre.
Junior Volunteer
Students between the ages of 14 and 19 can volunteer an evening or some time on a weekend once or twice a month. Junior Volunteers work in the long term care facilities and in seniors’ homes.
Palliative Care
Palliative volunteers provide social, emotional and spiritual support to persons and their families who are living with, or dying from, a life-threatening illness. This type of support has a major focus of improving the quality of life and death and involves spending quality time with clients providing companionship, friendly visiting, alleviating loneliness or sitting vigil while families take a short break. Special training is provided. Applicants should be caring, compassionate and reliable.
Cuddle Program
Children from birth to the age of two years make short visits to our care facilities to interact with the seniors. Volunteers with small pets are
able to bring the animal into the care centers for a short visit.
Adopt-A-Grandparent Program
Clients are adopted by adult and junior volunteers.
Cyberspace Program
Volunteers teach computer skills to seniors. They also research projects assigned by Health Region staff.
PPL Sitting Program
Volunteers donate time to visit over a cup of tea with clients who have been diagnosed with different levels of dementia at the Prairie Pioneers Lodge.
Corporate Support
Employers donate staff time to volunteer with seniors.
