Emergency Response Teams (ERT)

Emergency Response Teams, born from the First Responder program, is a very simple concept. In each community identified as an ERT site (a community fifteen minutes or longer from an EMS system), a “team” of responders is established, consisting of at least eight and preferably twelve members. The ERTs will be imbedded into the current EMS system and serve as an integral part of the health care team. They will be trained at the base level of the EMS system, the Cypress Health EMR program, but will continue to function as volunteers, thus remaining registered with Saskatchewan Health as First Responders. The members of the ERTs will also be included in the Continuing Education program. This will keep the members current as well as giving them a sense of belonging. The Review Committee recognizes that First Responders currently often suffer from burnout and isolation, which can result in a high drop out rate and difficulty recruiting new members. ERTs will be a more efficient and sustainable method. Since call volumes are low and long periods of time can pass between calls, allowing the members to respond in teams of two or more increases confidence and lessens stress.
