

The Cypress Health Region has a total of twelve ambulance services operating within its boundaries. They are made up of privately operated, municipal and regionally run services. Of the twelve(12), seven(7) are operated by the region, with the remaining five (5) being private or municipal services.

EMS Certification Levels
There are a total of 9 ICP’s(Intermediate Care Paramedic) , 38 PCP’s(Primary Care Paramedic), and 81 EMR’s (Emergency Medical Responder) totaling 129 EMS personnel. The Cypress Health Region also has 1 ACP(Advanced Care Paramedic) who is currently working as an ICP with the Swift Current EMS. In addition, there are First Responder groups located at Tompkins, Vanguard, Lancer, and Burstall.
Each of the certification levels is described below:
First Responder : First responders are members of the community that are notified when an emergency has occurred and respond to the scene in their personal vehicles. First responders undergo 40 hours of training and are capable of providing first aid, administration of oxygen.
Emergency Medical Responder : Emergency medical responders are members of the ambulance crew who provide basic treatment. They support the EMS staff and are orientated to ambulance operation.
Primary Care Paramedic : The PCP receives classroom training and clinical experience and is able to provide basic life support, including bandaging, splinting, administration of oxygen, AED and a number of other treatments.
Intermediate Care Paramedic : The ICP is able to provide basic life support as well as a number of advanced life support modalities including initiating a peripheral intravenous line, establishing advanced airways, defibrillation and the administration of some specific life saving medications.
Advance Care Paramedic: The ACP is able to deliver all basic and advance life support services. These skills include advance airway management, delivery of medications, arrhythmia identification, manual defibrillation and a number of other advanced skills such as ACLS.
